3-Day Certificate Workshop on Eye Tracking Methodology
Overview
The three-day certificate workshop on Eye Tracking Methodology (EYE TRACK 2025) was held between 6th and 8th February, 2025 at CHRIST (Deemed to be) University, Central Campus, Bangalore. The workshop was organized by NeuroCognition Laboratory and there were 20 participants made up of post graduate students, PhD scholars and professionals from various disciplines. The workshop provided hands-on experience with state of the art eye trackers by Tobii and SR research, and participants also learnt how to design and conduct experimental research using Eye Tracking Methodology. The summary of the workshop sessions have been provided below.
The workshop was supported by volunteers from the 'Bridging the Future' program at CHRIST, which is a collaborative program between the Centre for Social Action at CHRIST and BOSCH India. The program focuses on empowering youths from underprivileged and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to gain training on various areas to improve their employability. Day 2 (7th February- Friday)
Session 1- Eye Movement and Schizophrenia [Lecture] (9:00-10:00AM)
Session 2- Eye Tracking in Reading and Language Research [Talk] (10:00AM-11:00AM)
Summary
Dr Prakash focused on how eye tracking can be used in linguistic research. His talk was very interactive as he continued it with a discussion on what elements of language can be studied using eye tracking, the factors that may affect such experiments, the study of reading comprehension using eye tracking, etc. He explained various paradigms used in eye-tracking research to study language and framing of research questions.
Session 3- Hands-on experience with EyeLink 1000 Plus & Group Discussions (11:00AM-1:00PM)
Summary
This session had two parts running in parallel at two different venues. NCL was handling two groups at two times – small group sessions in NCL and discussion session at Assembly. Hall.
At NeuroCognition Laboratory, participants came in groups and got hands-on experience with the EyeLink 1000 Plus system. Groups 3 member or a 4 member group participated in following activity- calibrate -validate, Collect the data, verify the data. They took turn in being subject and experiment and experienced the various actions experimenter is involved in namely data acquisition and quality of data acquired. If there were any queries related to data acquisition, those were briefly discussed.
At the assembly hall, each group came up with their research question. With the help of mentors facilitating the group discussion, each group came up with an experiment design for their research question. Through this session, participants got an opportunity to convert their research idea into an eye-tracking experiment and understand various factors that must be considered while designing. Discussion activity --- involved discussing specific research question each group was assigned a mentor to assess the pros and cons of the experiment design.
Session 4- Eye Tracking Applications in Forensic Psychology [Talk] (2:30PM-3:00PM)
Summary
Mr Swastik Sahoo discussed the applications of eye-tracking method in Forensic Psychology research. He introduced the four major eye movements measures such as fixation, dwell time, and pupil dilation commonly studied in forensic psychology research. He referred to relevant studies to illustrate different areas of forensic psychology such attention, memory, deception detection where these eye movement measures provide meaningful insights. He also shared his experience and learnings from working on his own experiment using eye tracking method for his PhD thesis.
Session 5- Group Presentations (3:00PM-5:00PM)
